Ilyas Kashmiri Killed in MQ-9 Reaper Drone US Strike

Leader of the banned group Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami (HuJI), Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri has been killed in a missile strike by the US MQ-9 Reaper (a.k.a Predator B) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Missile strike targeted a house in the two room compound in Ghwa Khwa area of Wana, South Waziristan after intelligence source confirmed his presence in South Waziristan. Harkat-ul Jihad Islami has confiemed the death of the Mohammed Ilyas Kashmiri in the missile strike via an e-mail.

MQ-9 Reaper drone targeted the compound at about 11 p.m. on June 3 in the village of Ghawa Khawa area in  South Waziristan. United States has put US$5 million bounty on the head of the Ilyas Kashmiri. Other five personal included Usman, Ibrahim, Farooq, Amir Hamza and Imran.

Mohammed Ilyas Kashmiri was providing logistical support and coordinating attacks against Pakistan. He was the prime suspect in the attack at an ISI office in 2009.He is also suspected to have played main role in the recent attack on the PNS Mehran naval base in Karachi.  He was also implicated in the suicide bombing of the US consulate in Karachi five years ago.

Pakistani officials say that there are “strong indications” that Mohammed Ilyas Kashmiri had been killed, but it is difficult to say this with 100% surety as corpses has been burnt beyond recognition in the missile strike.

He was considered as of Al Qaeda’s main operational commanders in the area.
