Pakistan Army's Third Field Exercise in Thar Desert

Pakistan Army's third field exercise as part of the summer training program to test the capabilities of the soldiers was conducted in the Thar Desert. Soldiers from the infantry units of Pakistan Army, mechanized infantry and armored regiments took part in the four week long field exercise.

Pakistan Army’s Al Khalid Main Battle Tanks (MBT) along with other tanks and M-113 Armoured Personnel Carriers took part in this field exercise. Al Khalid MBT is equipped with new Explosives Reactive Armor (ERA) which has been able to defeat all known 120mm and 125mm rounds in testing done by the HIT. Al-Khalid MBT is developed by Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) to meet the requirements of the Pakistan army.


Al Khalid MBT is also equipped with Integrated Battle Management System (IBMS) and active threat-protection system. It carries 49 125mm rounds, 1,500 12.7mm and 7,100 7.62mm rounds.

Al Khalid tank uses 1200 horse power Ukranian power plant which allows it maximum speed of 72 kilometers per hour. It has a crew of three including a driver, a gunner, and a commander. Al Khalid MBT uses night vision devices to allow it to conduct operations at any time of the day including night time. It also has protection for NBC (Nuclear, Biological & chemical) warfare.

Corps Commander Karachi Lieutenant General Muhammad Zahirul Islam cherished the inspiring performance of the soldiers well as their devotion in this field exercise.

He said that soldiers of the Pakistan army should keep working hard during exercises as nation is now facing existential turmoil and troops should be ready to face different security challenges including the terrorism.
