Cheetah helicopter belonging to the Indian Army Aviation has crashed yesterday. This incident resulted in death of Major Atul Garje and Major Bhandu Chander.
Both polits were schedule to take part in exercise Vayu Kaushal and later on participate in Aero India 2011. Crash occurred around kilometer from the scheduled landing site.
Cheetah is the Indian name of the French Aerospatiale Alouette II SA 315B Lama light helicopter. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited produced over 250 HAL Cheetah helicopters under license from Aérospatiale which is now part of European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company N.V. (EADS).
Indian armed forces still operate around 120 Cheetahs helicopters. These helicopters were designed for a service life of 4,500 hours, but a large majority of the Cheetah airframes in service has crossed 6,000 flying hours.
