Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Naval Chief Admiral Noman Bashir, Deputy Chief of the Air Chief, Air Vice Marshal Asim Suleman, and DG Military Operations, Major General Ashfaq Nadeem Ahmed were also present at the Parliament House for the Joint Session.

Joint Session of Parliament is seen as a historic step by the powerful armed forces of Pakistan towards parliamentary accountability and Joint Session of Parliament lasted for over 11 hours.

PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and other PML-N parliamentarians criticized the security forces during the in-camera session but the Pakistan People’s Party and PML-Q defended the security forces which resulted in a heated exchange of words between the parliamentarians of these parties.


In Response to the PML-N parliamentarians, Ishaq Dar asked the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal

PML-Q’s leaders, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Wasim Sajjad, Dr Attiya Inayatullah and Sheikh Waqas Akram expressed their complete support for the security forces of Pakistan.

The parliamentarians were informed that use of helicopters with stealth technology and lack of low level detection radars allowed Americans to enter Pakistani airspace undetected.

PPP leasder, Dr Awan said that DG ISI has informed members of the Joint Session that highly sensitive and modern security systems are used to protect the Pakistan’s Strategic Assets which are spread all over Pakistan.
Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha has offered to resign from his post during the Joint Session of Parliament. He told the parliamentarians, “There was no intentional negligence but an aspect of failure is there,” and said that he had offered to resign thrice but Chief of had asked him not to do so.

Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) confirmed that initial information about Osama’s presence in Pakistan was provided to the United States by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). DG ISI also briefed Joint Session of Parliament about success of Pakistani intelligence agencies in arresting different al-Qaeda leaders during last 9 years.

Briefing was followed by Q&A session.

Rao Qamar Suleman about the status of the Shamsi Air Base. Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman replied that Shamsi Air Base was government land and “Whenever the government asks, it will be taken back.” Air Vice Marshal Mohammad Hassan informed the parliamentarians that land of the Shamsi Air Base was was acquired by the UAE and given to the United States.

PML-Q leader, Riaz Fatyana said that security officials have pledged once again that security forces abide by any decision taken by the parliament of Pakistan and they have not opposed the creation of a commission to investigate the events of May 2.

PML-Q leader, Riaz Fatyana said that purpose of the briefing to the Joint Session of Parliament was not to humiliate the security forces but to get the facts. He said that over 50 questions were asked by the PML-N, JUI-F and parliamentarians from FATA from officials of the security forces of Pakistan.

In response to a question of stopping the US drone attacks in Pakistan, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman replied, pointing at Prime Minister Gilani: “When the government asks for it.”

Maulana Attaur Rehman of JUI-F asked a question about the creation of the Taliban but after the reply by the DG ISI JUI-F parliamentarian staged a token walkout.

Parliament has approved a twelve point unanimous resolution for the creation of a sovereign commission for investigation the Abbottabad incident, fixation of the responsibility and recommendations to ensure the repetition of such actions in future.
